What Is Visian ICL™?

The Visian ICL™ (Implantable Collamer® Lens) is a phakic intraocular lens that is placed between the eye's iris and natural lens to correct the blurred and short-range vision associated with myopia, or nearsightedness. The Visian ICL™ can be thought of as an implantable contact lens, since it does not replace the eye's natural lens but rather serves as a supplement. One of the advantages of Visian ICL™ is that it is removable, and unlike LASIK eye surgery, Visian ICL™ does not permanently alter the eye's structure.

What Are the Advantages?

In addition to the fact that Visian ICL™ is not permanent, many of our Honolulu patients appreciate the procedure's simplicity. The Visian lens requires no maintenance and is entirely undetectable to both the patient and the casual observer. The Visian ICL™ is also more versatile than other methods of vision correction, with the capacity to correct a wider range of myopia prescriptions than LASIK or PRK.

Who Is a Candidate for Visian ICL™?

You are probably a good candidate for Visian ICL™ if:

• You suffer from mild to severe myopia but do not show signs of astigmatism
• You are between 21 and 45 years old
• You have shown proper anterior chamber depth and adequate eye tissue cell density during your comprehensive eye exam with Dr. Faulkner
• Your eyeglass prescription has been stable for the last year (i.e., it has not changed by more than 0.5D)
• You do not have allergies to any of the medications used during refractive surgery
• You are not pregnant
• You are not a good candidate for LASIK because of dry eyes, severe myopia, or thin corneas
