Honolulu Eye Surgeon First to Offer RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens (IOL) in HawaiiThe new RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only intraocular lens (IOL) that can provide cataract and refractive lens exchange patients with customized vision results following surgery. Honolulu, HI – Aloha Laser Vision is once again the first laser vision correction practice in Hawaii to offer patients an exciting new intraocular lens (IOL) technology—the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). This revolutionary lens is made of photosensitive material that can be painlessly and precisely adjusted with non-invasive ultraviolet (UV) light treatments post-surgically to provide enhanced vision outcomes for both cataract and refractive lens exchange (RLE) patients. Experienced Honolulu eye surgeon and Medical Director of Aloha Laser Vision, Alan Faulkner, MD, performed his first surgery with the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens on March 16, 2020 and is thrilled to have the opportunity to use this advanced lens technology to help more cataract and RLE patients achieve 20/20 vision without the need for additional surgery or glasses. In an FDA study of 600 patients, those implanted with the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens were twice as likely to achieve an outcome of 20/20 vision without glasses than those who received traditional monofocal IOLs. Dr. Faulkner explains, “With the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens we are able to create customized vision correction that can specifically suit a wide range of patients’ needs. The unique light treatments are quick, painless, and easy, while helping to ensure each individual achieves optimal improvement with his or her IOL.” Dr. Faulkner is excited to bring this game changing technology to his patients. He points out that, “Up until this point, refractive error after cataract surgery could only be resolved with either glasses, contacts, or laser vision correction. This is the first IOL that can be adjusted without a second surgery. That’s the key. We save patients from a second surgery if they change their mind on monovision, for example, or if they have some residual refractive error after they heal.” As with all vision correction procedures performed at Aloha Laser Vision, candidates for the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens are evaluated carefully to make sure the LAL is the best option for their needs, goals, and lifestyle. Dr. Faulkner finds that the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens is often well-suited for cataract patients who have had a previous refractive surgery, as these patients have a higher chance of needing a second surgery (enhancement) to achieve their desired outcome. Commonly these patients have been used to a lifetime of optimal vision, and the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens now provides a technology that is adjustable in a painless, non-invasive way. For cataract patients, cataract removal and RxSight Light Adjustable Lens placement are performed during a single surgery. After the procedure, patients must wear special UV protective lenses while the adjustment process takes place. To customize the vision correction power of the lens, a series of two to four painless, 90-second UV-light treatments are performed over a one to two week period. At the end of these treatment sessions, once the desired result has been achieved, a final light treatment is administered to lock in the final shape of the lens. Dr. Faulkner has been very pleased with the outcomes so far and by how well his patients are doing. He has had several patients comment on how great their quality of vision is—one patient even remarked, “Wow, this is like magic!” after her first adjustment. Ultimately, Dr. Faulkner is pleased to be able to offer patients state-of-the-art vision correction technology and devices that can help them achieve their best vision.
